United XV 9 - 23 Bristol Harlequins XV - 21/03/2010 Taunton United suffered their first home defeat of the season with a tough match playing top of the table undefeated Bristol Harlequins 9-23. Both sides enjoyed the wide pitch and perfect conditions with running rugby from all areas, Matt Firth kicked an early penalty then Quins hit back with a break up the wing, a clever chip ahead bounced into the hands of the winger who darted over for a try, soon after they kicked a penalty infront the posts. Defences held solid and neither side could really take control of the game, Tauntons scrum and line out were solid but in the loose Quins caused all kinds of trouble with effective counter rucking which spoilled some of the attacks. Firth slotted 2 more penalties but a mistake at the back of a scrum allowed a breakaway try from their scrum half who went 50 metres to score under the posts. Quins were picking the game up and from a rolling maul close to Tauntons line they controlled the ball well to drive over. Half time 9-20. Taunton had it all to do but could never really get going, mistakes and a very organised defence snubbed out everything they tried, the defence held solid and more than once Taunton camped on their own line holding out the Quins attacks. Taunton tried everything and had phases of good posession but just could not crack the line to score, Quins kicked a late penalty to seal the win. Disappointing for Taunton that they never put enough together to score a try but next week at home to Wells things will hopefully get back to business.
